Lake Area Employee Sheds Light On Unseen Advantages of Workshops
Executive Director Natalie Couch recently forwarded a letter from Angela, one of the employees at Lake Area Industries in Camdenton. This individual would be one that would likely succeed in competitive employment, as evident from the high quality of her letter. However, every time she is let go or decides the work is too diffiicult; she returns to the workshop and does an amazing job. The flexibility the workshop provides lets employees come and go as they need between both appointments and competitive employment opportunities. This is a significant benefit of sheltered employment that can be overlooked, but it shows how workshops serve a wide array of disabilities and are always available when needed.

I am writing to express my support for sheltered workshop employment, a model that has impacted my life.
My 11-year journey at LAI (Lake Area Industries) has been a blessing, providing me with a supportive and inclusive environment that understands my unique needs. Unlike traditional workplaces, LAI offers flexibility that allows me to focus my well-being. I can take time off for medical appointments, therapy sessions, and personal assistant needs without worrying about Impact This flexibility has been Important In helping me manage my health and maintain my independence.
At LAI, I've discovered a sense of belonging and Friendship. I've formed lasting friendships with my colleagues, which has helped me overcome my shyness and become a more Positive individual. The opportunity to learn and develop new skills through various job assignments has also been invaluable. I've mastered multiple tasks, including assembly, packaging, quality control, and inspection, and I take pride in my ability to adapt and learn quickly. I'm Especially impressed with LAl's Creative approach to motivation.
The LAI BUCKS program encourages us to come to work, perform at our best, and earn rewards that can be redeemed for snacks and treats from the LAI store. I appreciate the variety of healthy options available, which supports my goal of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The annual parties and celebrations hosted by LAI are also a highlight of my experience. These events bring us together, fostering a sense of community and connection that's hard to find elsewhere.
I completely support sheltered workshop employment programs like LAI. These programs offer a unique blend of support, Acceptance, and opportunity that can be truly life changing. I feel fortunate to have experienced the benefits of LAI firsthand, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a supportive and empowering work environment.
