Families, Workshop Leaders Take Employment Concerns To DC

Employees and family members met with all eight Missouri Representatives and both Missouri Senators July 27 during the second annual Missouri Day on the Hill.

The Missouri contingent traveled to the nation’s capital to discuss their support of the Extended Employment Sheltered Workshop Program and concerns about the future of employment for individuals with disabilities.

More than 20 family members from throughout Missouri joined members of MASWM in explaining the significance of sheltered employment in their families’ lives. Sheltered Employment provides individuals a safe stable workplace while increasing their confidence and skill level and earning a paycheck.

Sheltered employment has been threatened in recent years by groups opposed to the practice of commensurate wage scales and facility based employment. Missouri Day on the Hill provides a platform to tell the other side of the story—a story best told by the men and woman, themselves, with their families in support.

The event was hosted by A Team Missouri, a self-advocacy organization made up of employees of sheltered employment and their families, and by MASWM/MESA.
