JSI Has Success with Social Media Fundraising
Do you dread the thought of fundraising events all the volunteer coordination, organizing and tying up your precious staff? Well, given the experience of Jeffco Subcontracting Inc. in Arnold, social media fundraising might be the answer you are looking for.
For the last two years, JSI has participated in #GivingTuesday, generating good donations without a lot of work. As most people know by now, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U. S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
While there are many ways to promote an event, JSI focuses on two methods: direct emails and Facebook fundraisers. They ask their staff, board of directors and the JSI family support group, Friends For JSI, to send a direct email donation request to their friends, family and business associates. JSI supplies a sample email so all that is needed is to cut and paste. The email includes a link to the donation button on their website. Below is this year’s sample email:
JSI also used Facebook fundraising as part of their #GivingTuesday appeal and found it to be really easy! First, the workshop had to be set up on Facebook as a nonprofit. They again asked those on their staff, board and Friends For JSI who are on Facebook to set up a JSI fundraiser. It only took about four clicks. They suggest that fundraisers be set up for at least a month, so people who forget on #GivingTuesday can still donate after the actual day. For the last two years, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has matched donations up to $1,000 per fundraiser until $2,000,000 runs out (and that happens by midday). Facebook also processes donations at no fee for donations made on the actual #GivingTuesday. Note: Facebook does take about a month or so to send the funds.
The main “work” is sending out emails and posting on Facebook before, during and after the official day. People often think, “I want to give, but I’ll do that later,” and then forget. A couple of reminders usually results in additional donations.
So how much did JSI raise? Last year it was $7,000. This year the final count is not in, but they expect it will be in that same ballpark. That’s not bad for just sending some emails and posting on Facebook! As they get better at it, JSI expects get to more of their extended families and business associates involved and are sure it will grow. Good luck!
